In Photoshop if you zoom in lines and details can be more easily determined so if you like that hint And use layers, it helps a lot when you go through coloring/shading processes.

hey! the shading does do a big difference! very nice!
One thing you could do to help with the shading, (besides what has already been mentioned) is to also add some lighter areas, along with the darker ones, where the lighting would hit your pic more strongly.
Yes, layers are very good. I use paintshop pro more for my shading, so it is harder to say, but perhaps the equivilent of the burn and dash tools - to darken and highlight particular hair strands...
